Hot Octopuss Pulse III Duo Review

Hot Octopuss Pulse III Duo

I’ve been dreaming of the day I’d get to review the Pulse by Hot Octopuss. When I started my blog, I had just come back from Woodhull SFS16. I remember Erin Basler (a sex educator and disability advocate) mentioning what a great toy it was, not just in general, but for people with mobility issues, for folks with erectile dysfunction and many others. The Pulse II Solo or Duo used to be on my wishlist for many months. I used to imagine the great pleasure it could bring my partner… I wanted to use it in a BDSM dynamic. I wanted to use it for forced orgasm. I wanted to have him blindfolded and tied up, to tease him, to caress him and then pop the toy onto his hard cock and make him completely mine. Unable to fight orgasm. Orrr something of that sort. Did I drift away? You have to forgive me…

Then the joyous day finally arrived! Hot Octopuss asked me to review their newest model, the Pulse III Duo. Lucky me! I was trembling with anticipation. I opened the stylish box with the British flag on it (Hot Octopuss is a British brand), took the toy in my hands… and my heart sank. As much as the toy features flexible wings able to expand and fit different penis sizes, there’s a crescent at the bottom of the toy that’s completely molded and fixed, making the toy only compatible with penises with diameter of 1.4″ and less. I knew that my partner’s dick couldn’t remotely fit in the Pulse. I had to go back and remember the ghosts of past penises (these days I am much more into girls, so the rest of the penises I’ve played with date way back). Reminiscing on the past didn’t help much either. A good third of the penises I could remember wouldn’t be able to fit in the Pulse — I think. This came as a huge surprise to me, because I’ve read a number of other reviews of the toy, and no other blogger, reviewer or sex educator had mentioned that this toy has severe limitations when it comes to the girth it can accommodate.

I’m guessing that probably more than half of the penises in the world will be able to fit in the toy and experience great pleasure with it — but no statistics here to back this up. So I can’t recommend the toy to anyone who thinks they’re on the larger end of the scale without seeing the product in real life, at a brick and mortar, and judging for themselves.

But if there’s a will, there’s a way…

With plenty of lube, weird sideways positions, and maneuvering we managed to somehow use the toy. And I am more than happy to report that WE LOVED IT.

But first things first, what is Pulse?

Hot Octopuss Pulse III Duo ReviewPulse is a guybrator. It’s an external penis “sleeve” that vibrates. It doesn’t simply vibrate, but it oscillates, creating a much deeper, rumblier sensation. This technology was developed to help people with spinal injury achieve orgasm and experience pleasure. And it works beyond “great”. It’s a state of the art sex toy that has me drooling every time I see it. Finally a high tech, super cool, powerful and sophisticated penis toy that goes beyond tacky TPE penis sleeves.

The toy goes around the penis and since it has flexible wings, it can stay in place and give hands free pleasure (when the penis is erect). It can be used with or without lubricant for two different sensations. Without lube the toy will stay static, and the penis can enjoy the said hands-free pleasure; while lubricated it can be used as a vibrating stroker.

It’s made of silicone and ABS plastic, weighs 220 g or 7.76 oz, and it is entirely waterproof, rechargeable and features 6 preset vibration modes, as well as turbo mode. The “on” and “off” button is really easily distinguishable from the power up and down controls as they’re on separate parts of the toy. Accessing the turbo mode can be achieved by holding the “+” button for more than 1 sec (though pressing it can be a little tricky if the penis is already inside).

What is it good for?

Hot Octopuss Pulse III Duo ReviewThe Pulse III is good for practically everybody with a penis (and anyone who has a partner with a penis). It’s not just a masturbation device, but it can be used in various partnered scenarios (read some ideas a few paragraphs down).

This is also a great toy for anyone with disabilities. Anything from mobility and grip issues, to spinal injury and ED. Pulse can be used without an erection and can make even a flaccid penis ejaculate and experience pleasure. Yes, if you thought dicks are no good if they’re soft, think again! Penises can have pleasure with our without a hard on!

Another great realm of possibilities is for folks with sexual side effects from antidepressants. Many people (yes, men too!) experience anorgasmia as a result of antidepressant treatments and other medications. These side effects make it rather difficult to reach the point of no return. It often feels like the orgasm is so close but yet beyond reach. This can be extremely frustrating for both parties. Not only for the penis owner, but it can make the partner feel inadequate, unattractive or incapable of satisfying others. Using vibration can help a great deal, such as with small wands like the Tantus Rumble or the Mystic Wand Rechargeable. But the Pulse takes everything to another level.

Differences between Pulse II and Pulse III

Most stores still stock the older version, Pulse II, which sells for around $10 less than Pulse III. If you can afford it, I would recommend you get the III over the II, because the III uses a magnetic charger and is completely waterproof. Which does matter immensely for this toy because the entire inner part (and often the outside of it) gets all lubed up, not to mention possibly having ejaculate all over the toy! So being fully waterproof is pretty essential for cleaning up the Pulse. (Yes, the toy is not porous, but given how many ridges and grooves it has, lube easily gets stuck in places that are really hard to clean.)

When it comes to the Pulse II Duo vs. Pulse III Duo, there’s even more improvement. The outer motor of the toy, the one designed for the partner’s pleasure (see next section), is 25% more powerful. Again, the difference between the two is around $10, which is a small price to pay for waterproofness and more power.

Differences between Pulse III Solo and Pulse III Duo

Hot Octopuss Pulse 3 ReviewI know this review got a little confusing. The numbers II or III refer to the version of the toy; Solo or Duo refer to a key feature that differs between the two. Solo (II or III) is only a guybrator, meaning that it only vibrates on the inside, for the satisfaction of the penis. The Duo on the other hand (II or III) has one additional motor on the outside for the pleasure of the partner that’s not using it primarily. The “couple” function that the Duo has works for hetero, as well as gay couples. As long as your partner likes vibration, they can grind on the outside of the toy, while the first person is using the toy in their penis. This additional option is controlled by a remote control (which is also waterproof). The external motor has 3 power levels that are rumbly and broad, but not extremely powerful. The price difference between Solo and Duo is around $40 in each of the versions.

Enjoying it together

I am a strong believer that pretty much any toy is a couple’s toy. As long as you’re using it together with your partner, it’s a partnered toy. I think that any solo toy can be turned into a fun tool for your together time — sharing the experience is what counts. This is why I think even the Solo version is a great toy to be enjoyed with a partner. As I mentioned, you can use it in a BDSM scenario, you can simply hold the toy and stroke it for your partner, you can give them a blowjob while they’re using the toy (since the head of the penis is still mainly outside of the toy), or you can play with their balls or their ass… You can be 69-ing, they can be fingering you while enjoying the toy… The possibilities are endless.

Stepping into someone else’s shoes

I’m a strong believer of equality in pleasure. I’m a strong advocate for fixing the orgasm gap (the % of women who’ve experienced orgasm during their last partnered sex is far smaller than the % of men who’ve experienced orgasm during their last partnered sex). But to be fair, I also acknowledge that penis-owners don’t have as many choices when it came to toys. And that’s  unfair. Men can feel threatened by the numerous toys options a vulva-owner has. They may even feel like they can be replaced by a sex toy. This is why I think everyone should have a toy — better still, toys. Added benefit: guys can step into women’s shoes and finally get it: toys don’t replace partners, they enhance partnered time! Bottom line, penis-owners deserve pleasure and good choices too.

Things to consider

It’s worth mentioning that the Pulse III can feel a little obtrusive and weird for some users. It’s a very different sensation from that of other soft and squishy strokers. The Hot Octopuss Pulse is made of silicone and hard plastic, which can feel rigid and constraining for some penis-owners. Or at least it can take a little time getting used to it.

Things that can be improved in the future

I need to mention that the toy is a little loud, but from what I know from other reviewers, this is by far the quietest model. So I guess there’s only so much that can be done with this much power.

But as I said, what really troubles me is the size. The toy just doesn’t seem to fit in any possible way a penis with a girth greater than 1.4″, and even 1.3″ would barely be a good fit. The Pulse would greatly benefit from having editions in regular (the current) and large size(s). Or maybe even three sizes. After all, condoms come in 3 different sizes, at least, and they’re flexible.

Final Thoughts

Hot Octopuss Pulse III Duo ReviewThis multiple award-winning toy remains one of my best recommendations as a gift for penis-owners. It’s the Rolls Royce of penis toys. Even its Solo version brings so much joy and new sensations to the bedroom. It’s an absolute necessity for any man struggling with ED, anorgasmia, or any mobility issue, caused by aging, accidents or trauma. It’s also the ultimate masturbation tool that doesn’t assume the sexual orientation of the user, that doesn’t resemble any genitalia, orifice, or a sexual act performed with partner. It’s an entire new world of pleasure than any penis owner deserves to experience.

If you are able to spare the money and want to have more options for mutual pleasure derived from the toy, you can go for the Duo version that sells for $149. But the Solo version, priced at $109 will be great for most people. Remember, partnered fun depends on your imagination!

TRUSKYN Tru Stroke Beaded Penis Stroker Review

Doc Johnson TRUSKYN Tru Stroke Beaded

The name of this one is going to twist your tongue: Doc Johnson TRUSKYN Platinum Silicone: The Tru Stroke Beaded. That’s way too many words for a $19 toy. Looks like Doc Johnson really wanted to convince us that this product is in fact made of silicone, because they actually put “silicone” as part of the name of the toy. They’re absolutely correct, I am not so easily convinced. Even after reading the box, the name, the explanation, and the manual thoroughly, I still wasn’t sure if this was truly a silicone product. Why? Well, because Doc Johnson is well known for trying to trick people with “silicone blends” and all sorts of questionable business practices. After reading Dangerous Lilly’s post about other products of the Truskyn line, I was finally convinced, okay, this is silicone.

Sex toy materials

Why does this matter? In a nutshell, what your sex toys are made of is hugely important, because a number of products (and entire brands!) out there are made of porous materials, or ones that contain phthalates. Phthalates or phthalate esters are found in elastomers and are actually toxic for your body, especially in contact of mucous membranes, such as the penis, or the vagina. Most toys for penises, even if they’re phthalate-free are made of porous TPE or TPR, which are soft and pleasant to the skin, and feel squishy and highly realistic. But these can trap bacteria and put your body at danger, even if you thoroughly wash your toys and don’t share them with other people. Peepshow toys, one of my favorite online sex stores, has committed to not selling any porous sex toys. That’s why they don’t have a huge collection of strokers and masturbators; but everything they have is high-quality. One of the reasons I was excited that this penis stroker is actually silicone and body-safe, was because it’s affordable and pretty easy to use and clean.

A few words about penis masturbators

Penis sex toys that create the sensation of penetrating are called masturbators, sleeves or strokers. They usually look like a tube in which a person inserts their dick. Some are open ended (so the head of the penis can peek out of it), others are closed at the end and feel more like an orifice. Another type of penis toy is one that looks like a taco (Dangerous Lilly’s metaphor that I can’t refrain from using). Some people call it a manta ray. The Tru Stroke Beaded is a taco-style toy. It doesn’t cover the penis entirely, but this allows it to fit penises of different sizes and girths in particular. One can grab it and hold their grip more strongly for more intense sensations and make it feel tighter. Another huge advantage of toys of this shape is that cleaning them is a breeze!

The Tru Stroke Beaded

Doc Johnson TRUSKYN Tru Stroke BeadedIt’s a fairly simple toy. The texture on the inside isn’t anything mind-blowing. If you come from a world of Tenga or Fleshlights (which are fairly more expensive, and are porous), this stroker isn’t going to feel as realistic, or as enjoyable. But I think it’s unfair to compare it with these since they’re an entirely different category.

From using this toy on a male partner, I can say that this stroker is one of the most fun ones to use together. I am a huge fan of mixing activities and taking blow jobs and hand jobs to the next level. Alternating the two, using lots of lube, sucking while stroking, stroking while playing with the balls, adding some vibration on the balls. I like using penis sleeves during play-time. But a bigger and more sophisticated toy such as a Tenga Flip Hole, or a Fleshlight, or the Fun Factory Cobra Libre can be really uncomfortable for me to use on a partner (as well as for a guy to use on themselves: I don’t know if you’ve touched a Fleshlight, but these things are enormous and super heavy). So something lighter, smaller, simpler, easy to operate, or just toss around — like the Tru Stroke Beaded — brings new sensations to the table but doesn’t feel clumsy or cumbersome.

Another feature of this sleeve is that it’s not too long and actually leaves the head of the penis outside of the toy (again, that depends on the length of the cock), so it can be easily combined with a blowjob and teasing the penis head with the tongue. The open side of the toy alongside the shaft is bare too; if you have the opening at the bottom, you can lick the frenulum of the penis (that little piece of skin on the bottom where the head of the penis meets the shaft), which is really sensitive and receptive to flickering with your tongue or to vibration.

Doc Johnson TRUSKYN Tru Stroke Beaded

The Tru Stroke Beaded stroker even comes with a storage bag and 1 oz of lube included. The lube sample has glycerin, so I’d pick a better lube from Peepshow toys (which only sell glycerin-free intimate products).

The feedback that I’ve received from my partner is that The Tru Stroke Beaded definitely feels better than just using hands for masturbation, but feels less like actually having intercourse than some penis toys. He personally is totally freaked out by “skin” tones of toys (including dildos), not to mention that the only skin tone that Doc Jonson offers is “vanilla”. But luckily, they have a red version of the toy as well. Apart from the look of the toy, he really enjoyed using it. And if you have any doubts whether a silicone masturbator is for you, don’t forget that the silicone they use has a softer and more squishy feel than regular silicone dildos do.

Tips for using the toy

Always warm up a masturbation sleeve before use. Regardless of the material, these things tend to feel cooler than body temperature (and that can spoil the mood, feel really unpleasant or even cost you your erection for a while). Putting it in a bowl of warm water does the trick, or just running some hot water from the sink over it. Always use lube with sleeves and strokers in order to avoid chafing and too much friction. It also feels more enjoyable and natural.

Doc Johnson TRUSKYN Tru Stroke BeadedThere is no such thing as “too many” when it comes to sex toys. Feel free to use other types of toys alongside it: vibration on the balls, a cock ring, a vibrating cock ring, a butt plug, a prostate massager. The more the merrier. Adding more sensations can completely up your solo sex game.

Strokers are also great for building stamina and learning about your orgasm, when your point of no return comes, and when to slow down in order to last longer. Strokers are by no means toys just for sexually active people, and they can absolutely be used by penis-owners who are virgin to partnered sex. They’re also a great way to postpone intercourse, if you have a partner who’s not ready to have sex but you like playing together and giving each other pleasure without going all the way.

Last words

I am thrilled that there’s a new affordable stroker on the market that’s body-safe and can fit different penis-sizes. In fact, Doc Johnson even released two of these, there’s a ribbed version of this penis stroker, called The Tru Stroke Ribbed, that also retails for $19. You can get both from Peepshow Toys. I think you can’t go wrong with any of these. They’re a great way of figuring out whether you like strokers and they’re an inexpensive purchase that can give you an idea whether they bring something extra during masturbation or as part of partnered sex.
