Fun Factory Cayona Review

Fun Factory Cayona Vibrator

It’s not often that I absolutely love a vibrator that doesn’t really do what it’s supposed to. But it does so many other things so impressively well, that it won my heart the first time it touched my lady bits. Fun Factory Cayona is nothing short of an amazing g-spot and vulva vibrator — which for some reason is trying to be a dual vibrator. I wouldn’t have even figured this out if I didn’t read the description of the product, which says that it’s supposed to stimulate the clitoris as well as the g-spot. This it does not, but with all this in mind, I absolutely love it and am not even really disappointed that it’s not a rabbit vibrator.

When one of the companies I work frequently with, Peepshowtoys (kind to send me so many toys to review), asked me if I wanted to review the Cayona by Fun Factory, I couldn’t type “YES” fast enough. Why was that? First of all… well… Fun Factory! Duh! If you are not familiar with the world of sex toys, Fun Factory is a premium sex toy brand, made and designed in Germany, with really good quality products, joyful colors and wonderful shapes. And most of their sex toys are constantly on my wishlist.

What Is Cayona?

Cayona is a vibrator that looks like a vulva. Need I say more? It’s just so beautiful it makes me squeal every time I look at it. Not only does it look like a vulva, but it’s a great vulva vibrator, as well as a vaginal vibrator. For those of us damaged by the non-existent sex-ed in school and throughout adult life: vulva is everything on the outside, including labia majora a labia minora and the clitoris; vagina is the internal organ where penetration happens. Because Cayona is shaped like a vulva, it rests perfectly well on the vulva. Which is great if you like external vibration that’s not just concentrated on the clit. Technically any internal vibrator can be placed over the vulva, but the Cayona is squishy, soft and modeled in a way that just fits insanely well.

Fun Factory CayonaVibrations on the vulva, not just on the clitoris itself, can be extremely beneficial to people who dislike direct or pinpoint clitoral vibration, but also ones that like their entire genitalia played with and stimulated. The clitoris is not just a knob; what we see on the outside is just the glans of the clitoris, not the entire organ. The clit has “legs” deeper inside the body, on each side of the vaginal opening. So, vibration on a broader genital area can work really well for both arousal and achieving orgasm.

While using a vibrator over the vulva will block your vaginal opening (so it cannot be used alongside a dildo or during penetration), you can combine the Cayona with kegel balls or a vibrating egg internally. Or just enjoy the external stimulation.

Apart from pleasuring my vulva, Cayona is great for vaginal (internal) use. It’s neither a super long nor a very girthy vibrator with its insertable 4″ and a diameter of 1.5″, but its gentle g-spot curve and rumbly vibrations are all I needed. These days I find super pronounced g-spot curves too much, and the sensation can be almost painful. The Cayona will stroke your g-spot instead of jamming it directly. Thrusting in and out, or twisting the handle clockwise or counterclockwise does the trick perfectly.

You will need a lot of lube for vaginal play, because the Fun Factory silicone is a little draggy. Use a good amount of body-safe water-based lubricant with it. Unlike most silicone vibrators, Cayona is not just covered in a thin layer of silicone, which would make it feel almost like plastic. It’s softer and squishier, has a little bit of bend to it and feels much more natural. At the same time it does apply enough pressure on the g-spot to actually make you come.

What Does It Offer?

The Fun Factory Cayona is nothing short of a premium vibrator by a reputable brand. It’s entirely waterproof and submersible, it’s rechargeable with the help of a magnetic charger (no wall adapter included, just the USB cord), and it has a 1-year warranty. It offers deep and rumbly vibrations, has 6 speeds and 6 patterns and, thank god, it has a travel lock. It’s relatively quiet — I’ve heard people complain about the noisiness of other Fun Factory toys, but the Cayona is not one of them. It doesn’t come with a storage bag (Fun Factory toys never do, sad face), but the packaging is stylish and not too pretentious; it’s not very heavy, nor takes a whole lot of space. And it comes in 4 beautiful pale pastel colors: yellow, green, blue and pink.

So What Doesn’t Work?

dscn3263This vibrator is definitely not a rabbit vibrator. The little pearl that it has (the one that looks like a clit) cannot reach the actual clitoris in any possible way while inserted. Again, I don’t think this is a big deal, because this vibe delivers many other sensations. But if you’ve purchased it with the idea of using it as a rabbit, this might be a letdown. If you are looking for a rabbit vibe, I’d recommend checking out at the Fun Factory Miss Bi.

In Conclusion

Cayona is a stunning silicone rechargeable vibe with a firm core and flexible softer coating. It has multiple speeds, and it can be used in the tub or the shower. And it’s rumbly! Unless you are looking for a much bigger, longer and girthier vibrator, Cayona is a great choice. It also doubles as a vulva vibrator: just place it over your labia and clit and enjoy the broader external vibrations. Did I forget to say that it’s just $99? And you get 10% off from Peeshowtoys. And it qualifies for free shipping. Just sayin’! (wink)

Fun Factory BendyBeads Review

Fun Factory BendyBeads

Let me begin this post with the following… There aren’t many Fun Factory toys you can get your hands on for only $35. Hell, there aren’t many silicone toys you can get for under $50, let alone from a premium company. Which is quite important when it comes to sex toys (which can be very spendy these days). Everyone wants to buy body-safe and high-quality toys (or at least I hope that people are becoming more and more aware of body-safety and sex toy materials!). Everyone needs toys that are going to last them a long time, but this can rarely be achieved on a budget. Silicone is expensive, and product design and development are costly. And while there are certainly lower price-point brands that offer a number of silicone anal beads, I’ve often been less than impressed with their design. Beads look simple, it’s just a string of beads, right? What can go wrong or not work? Soooo many things, my friend. The Fun Factory BendyBeads can easily teach you what a good string of progressive beads are.

The Fun Factory BendyBeads make my inner anal slut blush. Every time I stumble upon them in my sex toy “box”, flashbacks of fun times make me smile devilishly. Before I start daydreaming of playing with the BendyBeads, let me tell you all about them!

What are BendyBeads?

BendyBeads are… well, they are bendy anal beads. Okay, all silliness aside, these are gorgeous silicone anal beads by Fun Factory, a company known for their high-quality products, innovative design and good business practices. They’re all made in Germany, and they’ve become one of the best and most well-known sex toy company in the world. Everything they make is body-safe, well-thought and simply gorgeous. They have a number of non-vibrating sex toys, such as anal toys and dildos, as well as a huge number of vibrators.

Fun Factory BendyBeadsThe toy arrives in the typical Fun Factory box: lightweight, stylish and minimalist. This isn’t Je Joue or Lelo-like packaging, there isn’t any pretense and no frou frou stuff. This might be a bit of a letdown for some folks who really want to get that feeling of luxury and glamour for their money. Nothing from Fun Factory comes with a storage bag, which is one of the few letdowns from the company, and the box is made of thin cardboard, which sometimes can arrive either damaged and bent a little bit. Not exactly how one would want their premium brand toy to arrive, especially if it’s for a gift. At the same time, there’s less of the impression that premium sex toys are only for wealthy pretentious people. Much more down to earth and “let’s play and have fun” vibe.

When you open the box you will see these beautiful beads. They’re available in black or red (currently Peepshowtoys only offers them in black). The first thing that will strike you is the super playful retrieval loop at the end. It looks naughty, but it’s super helpful for removal, as well as playing around with the beads. The string has an insertable length of 7.5″, but one can take in portions of the toy without having it slip out. The first bead has a diameter of around 0.8″, while the fifth bead measures 1.3″. This makes the BendyBeads great for beginners as well as advanced players.

How to use them

Anal beads are equally pleasurable and enjoyable for cis and trans people, for intersex folks, for penis and vulva-owners, for young and old, for straight or people of any sexual orientation. Because everyone has a butt and it feels good to play with it! While anal plugs are designed to just stay inside and apply pressure, and dildos are meant mostly for penetration and in-and-out motion, anal beads combine a little bit of both. They can stay put and are super flexible and comfortable to walk around while wearing them, engage in other sexual activities, but they’re even more fun during insertion and pulling out.

Fun Factory BendyBeads

As with all anal toys, always use plenty of lubrication. This applies even more to Fun Factory toys because the finish of their silicone is extra draggy. I would recommend a hybrid lube with them, such as Sliquid Organics Silk, because while it has silicone in it, it won’t be not enough to ruin the silicone toy, but enough to make the experience longer lasting and more pleasurable. While the Bendy Beads are flexible, they are still connected to one another and transfer movement better, unlike the FlexiFelix beads. The BendyBeads are more… buoyant, more jumpy. They apply more pressure and even gently shaking the handle will transfer the sensation to the entire string of beads. You can place a vibrator in the loop (but it should be thicker than the We-Vibe Tango) and it will be transmitted through the body of the toy. (Flexi Felix beads are more detached from one another, the whole string feels more limp and loose.)

One way of enjoying them is during vaginal intercourse. This applies to both partners, even in the case of a hetero-couple. If a penis-owner is wearing the beads, they will massage the prostate while wearing them and will make intercourse even more enjoyable. If a vulva-owner is wearing them while being penetrated by a penis, this will make her vagina feel tighter, ergo intercourse much more intense for her too. At the same time the beads can be felt by the penis as nice ridges, which makes the experience different and better for the dick as well. The last bead is also big enough that playing around with them can be used as a warm up for anal intercourse or pegging.

I would recommend going slowly and taking as little or as much of the string as your body is ready for. You can take your time and only use one or two beads for a couple of times, and slowly add more beads after a few play sessions. Even in the course of a single evening, you don’t have to insert all of the beads at once. Place the first and the second bead, then fool around, give each other oral sex, hand jobs, play with each other, whatever revs your engine. Only then move to bead 3, 4, etc. Butt play is not a race!

Safety and hygiene

dscn2923Because these beads are long, I would recommend using a lube shooter to lube up the rectum beforehand, and have plenty of lubrication for when the beads reach deeper inside. Removing the beads is extremely pleasurable, but don’t pull porn moves unless you are experienced with anal beads. So, don’t pull out the beads super fast and all at once. Removing anal toys should always happen nice and slow, and sometimes doing it too rapid can be painful and numb sensations, while slowly pulling out can be delicious and titillating.

Silicone toys are non-porous and can be properly sanitized even with just soap and water. I would recommend boiling anal beads, at least once in a while, or after every use, if the toy is shared by multiple partners. You can use a 1 to 10 bleach solution instead if you don’t have the time or the cookware to boil up water. Leave the toy in the bleach for 5-10 min. While the BendyBeads are seamless, there’s a decorative ridge that goes through all of the beads and adds some texture. This thing is a pain in the ass (pun intended) to clean. Sometimes lube gets stuck there, so you might need a brush to remove remaining fluids from that part.

In conclusion

Fun Factory Bendy Beads Anal If you are looking for progressive anal beads with a relatively girthy last portion, made by a good company and sold by a responsible retailer, the Fun Factory BendyBeads would be my first choice. There isn’t anything nearly as good on the market. While I greatly enjoy Tantus Ripple Large, which is of a similar size, it almost never stays put. The BendyBeads can stay inside during the friskiest of encounters. And at just $35 they’re one of the best pieces of anal strings you can get. If you are looking for smaller beads that don’t progress in size, the Fun Factory FlexiFelix would be my recommendation.

Satisfyer Partner Review

Satisfyer Partner Review

Note: The Satisfyer Partner appears blue-ish in my pictures, but it’s actually purple.

I really wanted to like The Satisfyer Partner. I really did. I was so psyched when there was finally a cheaper, more reasonable version of a partnered toy. A toy that wouldn’t set people  back $200, or $100. Because, let’s be honest, partnered toys are something that you don’t pull out every day. We’re not talking about a great dildo, or a good clitoral vibe. We’re not talking about a Magic Wand. If it was a category that was a necessity, that I knew people used over and over again, by all means. It’s worth spending 150 bucks on a good wand. It’s worth spending it on a good Njoy stainless steel toy. For a partnered toy you might or might not enjoy — not so much.

Satisfyer PartnerI first saw the new Satisfyer couples toys, the Partner and the Partner Plus, during the Sexual Health Expo in NYC this Sept. I was slightly annoyed that the Satisfyer has just continued to replicate other brands’ ideas or technology. But then again: most brands have bullet vibrators, most brands have wand vibrators, most brands have vaginal vibrators. I guess at some point an innovation in the field becomes a common category. And after all they didn’t completely rip off the We-Vibe design, the shapes of the Satisfyer toys were clearly different. (For those of you that are not familiar with the brand, We-Vibe is a premium brand that specializes in high-end products and innovation. They make some of the best vibrators on the market and they first created a couple’s vibrator that can be worn during intercourse.) So when Peepshow Toys asked me whether I wanted to review it, I had to enthusiastically say yes. I owed this much to my readers who, like me, don’t find money growing on trees. You might find most of the toys that you can buy from Peepshow Toys pricey, and that’s because the brand is only selling body-safe non-porous toys. And these often come with a price tag.

The new couples toys from The Satistyer come in two variations: The Satisfyer Partner and The Satistyer Partner Plus. The first one sells for $49.99, while the Plus is $20 more expensive. The difference is clearly the shape, as well as the two motors that the Plus version has, one for external and one for internal stimulation. I have no experience with the Plus, but JoEllen Notte, a fantastic sex blogger and educator that you should absolutely follow and read, has just reviewed the Plus for Peepshow Toys.

What does it feature?

On paper everything looks just fine. A silicone, body-safe toy. Sure, it only comes in purple, but that’s something we can all live with if a toy is actually good (I am biased, I love purple, but we and our preferences come in different shapes and colors #WeAreAllBeautiful). And I don’t hear people complaining much about the purple We-Vibe Rave or We-Vibe Touch.

The Satisfyer Partner is entirely submersible and it’s rechargeable. It even has multiple speeds and patterns (ten to be exact). It comes in a tasteful box (which imitates We-Vibe a little bit, a-gain! But I could live even with that). Sure, it doesn’t come with a storage bag, it’s just the toy, the charger and the manual. But a toy for less than 50 bucks rarely does. Not to mention other expensive options. Its battery lasts 65 min for 2 hrs of charge. As I said: not bad on paper.

How does it work?

It is supposed to work by inserting the more slender part in one’s vagina and leaving the bigger, bulkier part against one’s clitoris. Then you have vaginal intercourse while wearing it. Except that it never stays in place. NEVER. When you take a look at the design you can actually see that. There’s nothing that grips and that can possibly hold the toy in place. But that’s not the only design flaw. The external part is waaay too long and the motor is way higher than where the clit actually is (or at least mine, but we’re talking about almost missing it by an inch). This toy is way bigger than the We-Vibe 4 or Sync, so it stays higher up, closer to your belly, completely missing your clitoris. The vibrations are strong, but very buzzy. It’s a one button toy, so you have to circle through the different modes. Which is not that big of a deal because it starts on full speed for some reason. It was equally problematic when I tried it with a dildo, instead of a partner. It just never stayed in place and never remained in contact with my body and the right parts.

Is there anything you can do with it?

Satisfyer Partner Review

I know that some people are going to buy this toy regardless of what I say, and they’re going to want to make it work, because who wants to throw $50 away? Here’s a way I found that might work. Bear with me. Since the slimmer part is really flexible and can be moved out of the way or just positioned in whatever way you want, you might try to use the toy as an external clitoral vibrator. The way it works is the following: you will have to turn it upside down, with the horseshoe facing down, with the vibrating part against your clit (not the side with the button, but the inner part that originally was supposed to remain in contact with your body) and the slim flexible part opened up, almost as if the toy were straight instead of C-shaped. That turns the Satisfyer Partner into a decent clitoral toy. After all, it’s silicone and it’s rechargeable, so if you got it already, you might wanna make some use of it. But if you hate it, dispose of it with other electronics and batteries, don’t throw it in the regular trash please!

I hope that the Satisfyer would listen to feedback from customers and will improve the models, the way they did with the remodeled Satisfyer Pro 2.

And since I don’t want to leave a bitter taste in your mouth, I am going to follow JoEllen’s example and give you a couple of ideas for good budget vibrating toys. Looking for something that vibrates and can be used in partnered play? There’s the Optimale vibrating cock ring. You know what, penises and balls love vibration too! And if you get a good vibrator, you can both use it. Some options bellow $50 include: PicoBong Ako, Lust L2 Mini, The Sensuelle Point (all of which are small external vibes) and the vaginal PicoBong Zizo vibe, which can be used on clits as well. And dicks (obviously)! Be imaginative and share your vibe! A good option from the Satisfyer would be the Satisfyer Pro 2. If you want to get yourself something truly good, there’s the magnificent We-Vibe Tango. And if you are actually looking for a partnered toy, save up and get yourself an Eva. All of the above can be purchased with 10% discount with my Peepshow Toys code: WETLANDIA.

You should also read Emmeline Peaches’ review of the Satisfyer Partner, since the toy worked much better for her — she seemed to enjoy it a lot more than I did, and I always like giving people different perspectives.

B-Vibe Trio Plug Review

b-Vibe Trio Plug

b-Vibe Trio Plug

I am just gonna say one thing. Three independent, powerful motors. In one butt plug. Yes, I AM serious! Lo and behold: the Trio Plug from b-Vibe. It absolutely blew my mind (and my body).

You already know how much I love the Rimming Plug. It’s a pretty darn delicious thing to have in your bum. So when I saw the b-Vibe stand at yet another sex conference I was attending, and they have already launched their new model, I couldn’t resist the urge to immediately order it. When you have a team of sex educators behind a line of products, you don’t think twice. Even if you already own enough butt plugs for a lifetime. (Or so I thought!)

The Product

I am going to repeat myself while listing the features of this awesome plug, because in that respect, it’s almost identical to the Rimming Plug. It’s made of 100% body-safe non-porous silicone, which is exquisite to touch: velvety, matte and completely seamless. It has almost no drag to it and feels really good against your skin. It’s a rechargeable vibrating plug, which takes up to 2.5 hrs to charge completely in exchange for at least an hour of play (the motors a pretty strong and there’s only so much space for the battery in a small little plug). Of course, if you’re not jamming it up on full speed, it will last longer. You can even plug it in in the USB port, which is a very handy feature these days, with all the USB splitters around us and the constant lookout for a power outlet. The Trio Plug is shower-proof, easy to clean and safe to share with partners, when sanitized. I think this is a pretty important feature for this particular plug, because it’s much smaller than the Rimming Plug, ergo it’s much more beginner’s friendly and non-intimidating in size. What I mean by that is: it might be a good toy for your hubby (or sweetheart, or hook-up, or … you fill in the blanks) to start exploring butt and prostate play. One plug for all works just swell, when your toy is high-quality and won’t transmit or re-introduce infections. Dope!

Let’s talk about noise. It’s nearly silent on its lower settings, especially when inserted. When you get to the strongest vibrations, things get a little louder, but it’s still manageable to cover it up in a louder bar or public space.

The Remote

b-Vibe Trio PlugI can’t emphasize enough that the remote actually works. Not just works, but works within 30 ft! I tried it from the other part of the apartment (two rooms and several walls away), and it does its magic! It’s human-friendly, meaning that the interaction with it doesn’t make you want to scream into a pillow, pairs up immediately, controls the toy with no delay, looks really cool, and has easy to understand buttons. It even has a travel lock (just press the + and the – simultaneously and your toy won’t go off in the middle of your TSA security screening). Not that you need the travel lock that much, given that the plug comes with an awesome travel case, and it’s near to impossible for it to get turned on accidentally. But in case you just threw the toy and the remote in your purse, b-Vibe has your back. And butt for that matter (wink).

You can use the plug even without the remote, but the remote makes it really easy to control the speed/power. To pair the plug with the remote, you just need to press the power button at the bottom of the base. It will start blinking and your remote is connected (you have to first open the remote’s battery compartment and pull out the little protection that the battery has). From this point on you can go at yourself, or even hand the control over to your partner. It’s really convenient that you don’t have to reach back and press anything on the plug in order to change speeds or patterns.

The remote’s made of white plastic and silicone matching the color of your plug. The only difference between the remote of the Rimming plug is that it only has 3 buttons: plus, minus and the pattern, it doesn’t have the one for the rotating beads. So even if you order your Trio in the same color as your Rimming Plug, you’ll still be able to differentiate between the two. For the sake of it, I tried to see if I can use the Rimming Remote on the Trio Plug and vice-versa (at least the options that overlap), and it doesn’t work. Which is cool, because you can actually use both at once, without messing up which controls what. For instance you can have the Rimming Plug in your butt, while your sweetheart is enjoying the Trio, and the signals won’t get confused. Think how cool that is for threesomes, group activities, etc. The more plugs, the merrier. And the more people, the merrier.

Dimensions

The Trio Plug is much smaller than The Rimming Plug (Want to read my review of it? Find it here!). If you are just reading the specifications, you wouldn’t think so, but if you take a look at this image from the b-Vibe website you can clearly see how much slimmer the Trio is. If you want me to toss around numbers: it has an insertable size of 4.3” / 11 cm and is 1.25” / 3 cm wide at its widest. This would place it somewhere between beginner-friendly and intermediate. It starts off really thin, the tip is as big as a finger. You can check this out for an idea: my fingers are very small and slim. It’s so much easier to walk around with, or to sit while wearing it, than with the Rimming Plug. I definitely see this one as a good toy for an outing. The base is smaller than the one of the Rimming plug and gets in the way much less frequently. It makes using it while having intercourse much less of a challenge. If you have a short space between the entrance of your vagina and your anus, try rotating the base sideways, so it’s even more out of the way.

Power and Patterns

Here comes the best part. It has 8 vibration levels and 9 patterns, which are all comprehensively explained in the manual. The patterns are revolutionary: they cascade from motor to motor, pulsate, oscillate… It’s like an amusement park for your bum. It’s just… RAD. I never thought my butt could be further impressed and that I would get to experience anything new and extraordinary at this point in life, but I stand corrected.

Using It

b-Vibe Trio PlugI never suspected I can cum from a butt toy, especially from a… plug. Without even doing anything, not even thrusting in and out. Just from having the plug in. You simply place it, turn it on, breathe deeply, squeeze your PC muscles, clench and relax, clench and relax. And voila! You just came. Just like that! And if you add some clitoral vibration (the Doxy on your clit makes for a great combo), while having the Trio buzzing joyfully inside of you, that will really rock your world. It’s better than vaginal penetration + clit vibration. It’s a whole new world of orgasms, uncontrollable, unstoppable…

Just keep in mind that while cumming, especially when the plug is well lubed, it might slip out, because of your convulsions while having an orgasm. It’s not that big of a deal, because the plug stays under other circumstances. I personally shoot out everything outside of me, even vaginally, when I cum. That’s how hard I clench, but that’s just me, your body and orgasms could be different.

Unusual Applications

Powerful uncontrollable orgasms? Hence the BDSM possibilities that this plug offers. Not just because it can be operated from distance or by someone else, but because you can use it for forced orgasm.

And last but not least, it’s a pretty decent clit vibe if I have to be honest. The motors are so strong and so pleasant that I had to try the plug against my clit. Using it on the first possible setting, which has only the motor at the tip on, is ideal for pinpointed clit vibrations. And it’s easy to hold, and it’s soooo rumbly! It’s even great as an overall vulva vibe (vulva being the umbrella term for all the external genitalia: the labia minora and majora and the clit, not to be confused with vagina, which is your orifice). Because it has the three independent motors and patterns that wave from one motor to the other, it can give you sensations that don’t really compare to anything else out there. And of course, you can use it as a vag plug, especially if you like (to try) vibration at your vaginal opening. Just have fun and try different things out.

Sigh… I so wish b-Vibe started making vaginal and clitoral toys. But that will defeat their name (b for butt), I know, I know. They should have sister company then! Ha!

Packaging

Trio comes in the same awesome box and travel case as the Rimming Plug. Only this time the color scheme is different. With the old one we had a sage & black theme: those were the two color options for the plug, while the travel case came only in sage. This time it’s purple & black. The product box is purple, while the travel case is black, even if you get a purple plug.

Perhaps you are tired of ads and labels trying to tell you that their product is the best, made of safe, organic, responsible, good-for-you, touched-by-a-magical-fairy materials. Everything nowadays is USDA organic, everything is the purest. Or maybe you are simply tired of marketing trying to scare you. Being told that you’re going eventually have cancer, or get whatever disease, or experience this and that negative effect if you keep eating, buying or using what you’ve been having so far isn’t everybody’s favorite topic. First, because we think that whoever is saying that their product is good, healthy or safe is lying. And second, because we don’t want to be scared, finding out that what we’ve been using until today has actually been really bad for us. I can understand why this topic can be tricky and why people are pushing back from the hippy-dippy wave. I totally get the: “If I hear the phrase locally-grown heirloom tomatoes once more I am gonna scream into a pillow”.

Well, I am a sex educator. And as such, I want to make sure that you’re not gonna make the same decisions I made a couple of years ago, due to lack of knowledge and enough information. What am I talking about? Yes, I too used to have a lot of cheap sex toys. I too thought that I could save some money and that I didn’t need silicone, for instance. I too ended up spending actually more, because of trying to be cheap, than what I would’ve spent if I knew better. I am going to soon write an article about how to get inexpensive and affordable sex toys, which are still body-safe, non-porous and good for you, but let’s start with A-B-C and find out why do you in fact need to buy toys made of one of the following materials.

body-safe silicone sex toys

Silicone

Ahhh, the silicone. How could I not start the list with it? Silicone is the emperor of body-safe materials. It has a certain amount of flexibility and is a great material for anything you can think of: dildos, vibrators, cock rings, butt plugs. These days more and more companies are offering silicone sex toys. You can have it in all imaginable colors and different finishes. It can be glossy and shiny, or matte, more squishy, or really hard (most vibes or toys that have some mechanics in them have barely any to absolutely no give or flexibility, even if they’re covered with silicone). You can boil it, or use a 10% bleach solution for sanitizing it. If you are not sharing it with other partners, simply washing with a toy cleaner or soap after using it is enough. But even if you can’t wash it right away, it’s not gonna harbor any bacteria. No need to store it separately in a bag or a pouch. It doesn’t get too cold, it usually has a very comfortable temperature. And it’s not too heavy. What more to ask for? Its only downside is that used anally it can keep some remaining smell, which will take time for you to get rid of (a post about that coming soon too). Think of silicone ice trays: if you put coffee in them, they’re gonna smell of coffee.

Trusted brands: for dildos: Tantus (US based), G-silicone aka Godemiche (UK based), Vixen Creations, Vamp Silicone, FunkIt Toys, Frisky Beast, Bad Dragon. Stores like Good Vibrations, Lovehoney, and The Pleasure Chest have their own lines of silicone toys as well. For vibrators and anal toys: Lelo, We-Vibe, Fun Factory, Je Joue, JimmyJane, Jopen, OhMiBod, Leaf, PicoBong, L’Amourose, B-vibe, Nexus, Aneros

Stainless Steel

stainless steel sex toysAmazing high-end material, that’s going to outlive you. These toys are just insertables, they don’t have motors. There are the dildos and the double ended toys, and of course, the butt plugs. A lot of BDSM gear is made of steel: cages, some parts of restraint and bondage systems, even penis plugs. It’s a heavy material, which makes your toy not the most travel-friendly. On the other hand, it’s great for temperature play. You can run some warm water and have your toys slightly hotter than your body temperature. It feels mind-blowing and is great for arousal and blood circulation. It’s amazingly easy to clean and it doesn’t hold any smells.

Trusted brands: Njoy, Pretty Plugs

Aluminum

Aluminum has similar qualities to steel, but is lighter and in general cheaper.

Trusted brands: Crowned Jewels, Tantus Alumina series

Glass

Glass toys are pretty awesome for temperature play too. You can’t put them in boiling water for sanitizing purposes, but you can use them for temperature play: use warm running water, or a bowl. Or leave them in the fridge. They can look really beautiful and usually have cool designs. The good brands offer really strong glass that is most likely not going to break even if you drop it. Avoid cheap glass toys under $50. Don’t buy glass butt plugs with loops at the end and handles. They can break even while using them. If you want a glass toy but are not able to afford a high-end one, stick to clear glass (avoid colorful glass toys, because in cheap toys the color is usually achieved with some questionable polish or finish that starts chipping off; it’s not an actual colored glass). All glass toys are quite heavy and generally fragile, making them poor travel companions.

Trusted brands: Fucking Sculptures, Crystal Delights, Luscious Playthings, Standard Glass, Simply Blown

Wood

If you take good care of your wooden sex toys, they’re gonna last you a lifetime. They’re light and environmentally friendly. What makes quality wooden toys expensive is that they’re hand-made and the finish that’s used on them is medical grade. Anything else will start cracking or the wood will swell after washing several times.

Trusted brand: NobEssence

ABS plastic

It’s rare these days to find toys entirely made of ABS plastic. Usually bullet vibes, such as the We-Vibe Tango, are made of plastic. What’s most common is that the handle and the controls of silicone vibes are made of plastic. Vibrators by Lelo are a good example of that. Plastic is absolutely hard and usually shiny.

Crystals and stone

These days there are more and more dildos, anal plugs and vaginal eggs made of granite, onyx, jade and other stones or crystals. They’re widely used in Tantra practices. Toys made of these materials are really heavy and are usually expensive.

Trusted brands: Chakrubs, Laid

On the other hand

Toys made of the above materials are not just body-safe, but they’re non-porous as well. Which means that they will not harbor bacteria that lead to infections. No amount of washing, cleaning, disinfecting, or soaking in bleach solution will remove what’s stuck on your toys if they’re porous. A lot of porous toys contain phthalates and plasticizers that are highly toxic. They can cause irritation, toxic-shock syndrome, chemical burn, and bacterial vaginosis. Even if you’re not experiencing these symptoms or anything unusual, your toys will start deforming and smelling really foul. It’s highly recommended that you toss them away after a year, and that you use condoms with them. So really, if you do the math (even just the cost of condoms), it’s really not worth it in the long run. Not to mention the medical issues associated with nasty infections.

Warranty

All of the above brands have at least 1 year warranty. With rubber and jelly toys you never get that because they usually fall apart much faster.

What to avoid

Avoid toys made of: TPR, TPE (thermoplastic Elastomer), rubber, jelly, elastomers.

The emotional side

Cheaper and low-quality toys can mess with your head and emotions too. They often come in repulsive and superficial packaging that can make you feel dirty (not in a good way), and even put you off sex or off buying a sex toy for a while. Why would you get something that makes you feel disgusted by yourself?

How to get it right every time

body-safe silicone sex toysOkay, I get it. A lot of people don’t really care what their toys are made of. Reading one more label: no way! So I am going to make it really simple for you. One way of making sure that a toy is body-safe is to consider the manufacturer and/or retailer. If a toy is made by a trusted and reputable brand, that’s been known for making body-safe premium toys, you aren’t gonna get it wrong. But many of these brands have their cheap replicas and counterfeits in places like eBay, AliBaba or AliExpress. Amazon is flooded with crappy fakes too. Another way to make sure you are getting the real deal is by always shopping from the manufacturer or a good sex shop. Take a look at my directory of reputable retailers. Most of these stores will not even carry jelly and rubber toys. Or will be very clear about it. Unfortunately, Lovehoney still has a ton of non body-friendly materials. But at least they will never call “silicone” something that is not.

What about men?

Unfortunately, most “male” sex toys, such as masturbators, strokers, masturbation and stamina sleeves are made of TPE or some kind of elastomers. I would recommend sticking to brands such as Tenga or Fleshlight, taking good care of your toys and getting rid of them after one year of use. Luckily, Bad Dragon is offering penetrable toys made of silicone. One thing about them is that they design fantasy toys; so don’t expect the realism you will get from Fleshlight. I personally think it’s less creepy to go with a fantasy toy or with some of the futuristic Tenga designs, than with a weird looking sleeve that has a mouth, a vulva or an anus at the end, but that’s just my own preference, as a non-penis owner. Just as I don’t really like “female” sex toys that are too realistic and resemble a penis too much. Inexpensive body-safe masturbators I can recommend are the Tenga Eggs. Quick tip about sleeves and masturbators: soak them in warm water before use. You don’t want to put your penis in something even slightly cooler than body temperature.

Last words

silicone body-safe toysI certainly understand the appeal of cheap toys and feeling that you are getting so much for so little. Everyone loves a bargain. Being able to grab several things and still have your total under $100 is a call I couldn’t resist for a while too. Until I was able to compare quality sex toys made by Lelo and some cheap jelly deals that I’d bought in the lonely nights of a long-distance relationship. When the toxic toys started smelling weird, getting sticky and melting next to each other I had to throw them all away, not long after purchasing them. If I had to put together all the weird crap that I’ve “invested” in, now I can easily see that I ended up spending what could’ve gotten me several good quality toys. What you put next to or inside your private parts is really, really important. As important as what you eat. Don’t overlook what you’re using for your pleasure, and don’t be missing out on the pleasure you can have. Good companies invest in research, innovation and design. And the products that you’re buying from them will bring you much more satisfaction. Believe me! You deserve it.

If you ever have questions or doubts about particular toys, don’t hesitate to ask me. If I don’t know the answer, I will research the brand and the manufacturer, and will give you guidelines on how to be able to tell what’s what.
